The conference featured a wide variety of speakers who discussed a range of formulation types from pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and home goods. Furthermore, there were a number of talks on techniques for studying formulations including from Dr Fraser Laidlaw (The University of Edinburgh). Fraser’s talk focussed on the formulation work done on our departments Cryo-FIB SEM facility. Fraser provided case studies where the Cryo-FIB SEM had been used to determine the microstructure of a sunscreen product and to measure size of protein aggregates in milk.
Dr David Crosby was also in attendance presenting a poster titled ‘Correlating Triborheology to the Sensory Profile of Cosmetic Formulations’. The poster highlighted our bespoke triborheology set up and how it can be implemented to study the ‘skin feel’ of formulations. This can be done by tracking how the friction behaves at different rotation (‘rubbing’) speeds. By combining our friction measurements with consumer data allowing us to map key formulation metrics to consumer feedback. PhD student Tereza Prokopová, presented a poster titled ‘Investigating the Effect of Extrusion on Semi-solid Cream Formulations’ which looks at formulation metamorphosis based on how the dispensing method for creams with particles dispersed in them. Tereza was also awarded the Best Poster Prize!
