ECFP at the International Soft Matter Conference 2025

Last month, members of our group attended the International Soft Matter Conference (ISMC) 2025, held in picturesque Chania, Crete. The event brought together researchers from around the world to discuss the latest advances in soft matter science: from colloids and polymers to active matter and biological systems.

18 November 2025

The conference featured an exciting mix of plenary talks, parallel sessions, and poster presentations that provided the perfect base for scientific exchange and networking. Our group contributed both with oral and poster presentations, sharing recent results on rheology of complex fluids, active matter, colloids and biobased materials.

Our ECFP member Andreia Silva had the opportunity to present part of ongoing work on understanding the slip and electrostatics of polyacrylic acid microgels in hydroalcoholic systems. She says: “The conference highlighted how interdisciplinary Soft Matter is and the directions that it’s taking. The atmosphere was both professional and welcoming, creating the perfect environment for exchange of ideas and cross-disciplinary conversations”.

A Postgraduate Perspective

Our PhD students also found the conference enriching: “I think the conference was exceptionally well organized and provided a vibrant, interdisciplinary environment. It offered a great opportunity to connect with researchers working in similar areas, as well as those from different fields, sparking new ideas and perspectives” said our first year PhD student Huadan Xu.

Louise Overzet, also a first year PhD student said “The ISMC, held in Crete was the first conference I had the opportunity to attend, and it was a particularly valuable experience. As a first-year PhD student, it gave me the chance to present my research to a wider audience and to engage directly with researchers working on similar topics, as well as with those simply interested in my work. During the two poster sessions, I had many stimulating discussions with scientists from different backgrounds, who offered insightful feedback and advice on my project”.

We returned from Crete with new ideas that will definitely boost our ongoing projects.
