David Fairhurst

Dave is a Reader in Soft Condensed Matter Physics with experimental expertise across a range of measurement techniques and a variety of soft and fluid materials. His industrial portfolio includes:

– developing sustainable foams for fire-fighting applications
– improving the coating formulation and process for pharmaceutical tablets
– controlling the stability of foams (both wanted and undesirable) in the drinks industry
– investigating the dissolution process of shampoos and conditioners
– characterising the influence of polydispersity in model colloidal systems
– collaborating with equipment manufacturers to improve the functionality of magnetic stirrers
– understanding the evaporation of large arrays of droplets
– optimisation of spray-drying to generate hollow particles

Dave has expertise in sample characterisation using light-scattering, rheology, microscopy and optical coherence tomography, and brings a creative problem-solving approach to industrial collaborations.
